China is the world’s earliest inventor of sericulture and silk‑weaving techniques, having successfully domesticated the mulberry silkworm as early as before 3000 BCE. The earliest archaeological evidence of sericulture comes from a half‑cocoon unearthed at the Yangshao‑culture site in Xiyin Village, Xia County, Shanxi Province. At the Qianshan’ang site in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, fragments of silk fabric, silk threads, and silk ribbons have been discovered. In addition to silk, early textile materials also included kudzu and hemp. At the Caoxie Mountain site, within the Majiabang cultural layer, fragments of kudzu textiles dating back more than six thousand years were found—making them the oldest known physical examples of kudzu textiles excavated in China, characterized by mountain‑shaped twill patterns and diamond‑shaped twill patterns.
During the Shang and Zhou dynasties, silk production emerged as a vital social economic activity, and jacquard weaving began to take shape. Archaeological discoveries, such as the tomb of Fu Hao at the Yinxu site, confirm that silk was widely used by the aristocracy. By the Han dynasty, silk‑weaving techniques had reached their first peak, with patterns becoming increasingly fluid and intricate. Zhang Qian’s missions to the Western Regions opened the Silk Road, transforming silk into a key medium for cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world.
The Wei-Jin through Sui-Tang periods marked a phase of integration and innovation in silk‑weaving techniques, with patterns incorporating exotic motifs from Central Asia, Persia, and other distant regions. Tang‑dynasty silks were sumptuous and exuberant, and the emergence of weft‑tapestry weaving represented a major milestone in Chinese textile history. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, craftsmanship grew increasingly refined, adopting a more restrained and elegant style, while the art of kesi and brocade reached its zenith. By the Ming and Qing eras, the complexity of these techniques had attained its peak, giving rise to distinct regional characteristics. In the Ming period, Luzhou silk gained widespread renown, earning the celebrated reputation: “South to Songjiang, north to Lu’an—clothing the realm.”
In the modern and contemporary eras, textile technology underwent profound transformations. Dyeing techniques evolved from the use of natural dyes to the adoption of synthetic dyes, with new classes such as reactive dyes emerging alongside high‑temperature, high‑pressure dyeing processes. During the 20th century, a succession of novel chemical fibers was introduced. At the same time, various functional finishing technologies endowed textiles with properties like moth resistance, shrink resistance, stain resistance, and flame retardancy, giving rise to a range of performance‑oriented fabrics—including thermal insulation, antibacterial, antistatic, and radiation‑shielding materials. Meanwhile, innovative fiber materials such as soybean protein fiber, silkworm pupa protein fiber, and chitin fiber have been continuously developed, expanding the scope of textile applications.
Numerous traditional textile techniques have been safeguarded and creatively revitalized as intangible cultural heritage. The Xiangyunsha weaving technique, with a history stretching back more than 1,600 years, involves over thirty meticulous steps, including “three steamings, nine boilings, and eighteen sun-dryings,” and today is being reimagined through youthful designs and a “New Chinese” aesthetic that seamlessly integrates into contemporary fashion. Nantong’s tie‑dye cloth‑weaving tradition employs single‑spindle hand‑cranked spinning wheels and foot‑operated looms with hand‑thrown shuttles, preserving a relatively primitive form of hand‑dyed weaving; in 2011, it was inscribed on the national list of intangible cultural heritage. Likewise, the Lu silk weaving technique has also been designated a national intangible cultural heritage, with its practitioners striving to restore the industry’s former glory through product innovation and by leveraging the Belt and Road Initiative for global promotion.
